Greta Thunberg: Attacks & smear campaigns won’t stop us. This mission is about Gaza—2M people trapped under siege, starved & bombed daily. We call on governments to ensure safe passage & on people everywhere to raise their voices
Sadly, the US Academy, which awarded us an Oscar three weeks ago, declined to publicly support Hamdan Ballal while he was beaten and tortured by Israeli soldiers and settlers.
The European Academy voiced support, as did countless other award groups and festivals. Several US Academy members—especially in the documentary branch—pushed for a statement, but it was ultimately refused. We were told that because other Palestinians were beaten up in the settler attack, it could be considered unrelated to the film, so they felt no need to respond.
In other words, while Hamdan was clearly targeted for making No Other Land (he recalled soldiers joking about the Oscar as they tortured him), he was also targeted for being Palestinian—like countless others every day who are disregarded. This, it seems, gave the Academy an excuse to remain silent when a filmmaker they honored, living under Israeli occupation, needed them the most.
It’s not too late to change this stance. Even now, issuing a statement condemning the attack on Hamdan and the Masafer Yatta community would send a meaningful message and serve as a deterrent for the future.
Mahmoud Khalil isn’t an illegal alien.
He isn’t a terrorist.
He’s a Columbia graduate student and a legal U.S. resident. He's a husband. And his wife, a US Citizen—8 months pregnant—has no idea where he is.
The Department of Homeland Security snatched him off campus, disappeared him without a trace. No charges. No trial. Just gone.
This is how authoritarian regimes operate.
It's what happens when the First Amendment only applies to the “right” kind of people—it's only a trial balloon for a broader crackdown on speech.
If they can do it to Khalil, they can do it to you.
First, they come for the speech of legal immigrants.
If we don't speak up, do you know what comes next?
It should come as no great surprise that a Democratic Party which has abandoned working class people would find that the working class has abandoned them.
While the Democratic leadership defends the status quo, the American people are angry and want change.
And they’re right.
We wish we had better news. But as of now, #MarcellusWilliams is still scheduled to be executed by Missouri tonight at 6 p.m. central for a crime he is totally innocent of.
Don’t stop sharing his story. It’s not too late to save an innocent life. https://t.co/eofSDX66tC
“If you're here tonight to defend what Israel's done, knowing full well what Israel has done… I'm sorry you're a sociopath.”
Watch @mehdirhasan's closing arguments during his @OpentoDebateOrg debate with Eylon Levy, former Israeli government spokesman.
"The Israeli army called my shooting an 'accident,' claiming the soldiers fired live rounds into the air ... The truth is they fired straight at me."
Column: I'm an American activist. Israeli forces shot me at a peaceful protest in the West Bank https://t.co/QiT5Lz1Bnh
Notice the strange "of Turkish origin" qualifier here.
Why put that unnecessary detail in the headline if not to poison the well and suggest that it is not as significant as if Israel killed a "real American"?
