Before FBR starts preaching about the 30 September deadline, perhaps it should first explain whether taxpayers were ever given the full statutory 90 days to file their returns.

Credit where it’s due: FBR issued the draft TY 2026 return on 7th May—a positive step which i appreciated on this forum. Ideally, this should have ensured that a fully functional return was available from 1 July, giving taxpayers the complete 90-day filing period envisaged by law.

But what actually happened?

The return form appeared around 13 July, yet submission wasn't enabled. Actual submissions only started around 26–27 July, followed by countless errors and glitches, I have been sharing here.

Then, IRIS was taken down for maintenance from 8 August to 10 August. Even after maintenance, taxpayers continued facing technical issues, even to date(below screenshot is latest where system was not making calculations yesterday for almost 5-6 hrs)

So let's stop pretending that taxpayers have enjoyed a smooth and functional 90-day filing window.

Yes, many taxpayers wait until the last minute—that is a reality. But a large number of ordinary taxpayers depend on consultants and professionals. When the system itself is unstable, errors keep appearing, and even professionals are struggling to understand and navigate the portal, how exactly are people expected to expedite their returns?

The purpose of a deadline is not to create panic. It is to provide a reasonable and fair opportunity to comply.

If the law intends to provide taxpayers 90 days, then they should effectively get 90 functional days—not 90 calendar days on paper while the system remains unavailable, under maintenance, or riddled with errors.

Technically, a fair 90-day period should be counted from the point when the system became reasonably functional after the maintenance period ending on 10 August.

FBR should announce an appropriate (till 10 Nov) extension now and take taxpayers out of this unnecessary circus and psychological pressure surrounding 30 September.

A deadline is only fair when the system required to meet it actually works.

As I said before, it would be better for the Muslim countries of the Middle East to adopt a realistic approach rather than Westernization for their political, economic and defense interests and to have strategic relations with Russia and China, because these two secular world powers have no ideological reservations about the development of Muslim countries, and similarly, Russia or China have no reservations about the Muslim world. FBR’s IRIS system is truly pathetic. Since yesterday, returns are being filed, but they are not appearing under “Submitted Returns”. Everyone is running around asking others: “Bhai, return submit ho gayi hai, but submitted mein show kyun nahi ho rahi?”

One system cannot be handled properly. A few days it works fine, and then we are back to the same chaos and technical glitches. And soon, the messages will start again: “Only 20 days left, file your returns before the deadline!”
