Really useful points here to ensure retrieval practice is consciously designed

1. Not providing enough challenge, especially initially: Giving quizzes, where the first retrieval is very soon after learning, can create the "illusion of competence" where students recall easily on that first attempt, but later performance suffers. The initial retrieval needs to be sufficiently challenging to be effective.

Easy retrieval often involves retrieving information based on superficial cues or associations, rather than engaging in deeper, more elaborative processing. This type of shallow processing can lead to memories that are fragile and easily forgotten.

When retrieval is effortless, the brain doesn't need to work as hard to retrieve the information. Evidence suggests that this lack of effortful retrieval can result in weaker encoding of the memory trace, making it less durable over time.

@m_chiles In our school, any student who goes through the day without picking up a negative point automatically gets three positive points. No-one has to put it on - the system does it overnight. It goes down as “getting the basics right”

1. Proust’s Boiled Frog- things have been like this for so wrong people don’t even notice things are wrong. ‘It’s not so bad,’ they say. ‘At least the kids are happy.’ But in the end, you can get used to anything- even the intolerable.
2. The Soft Bigotry of Low Expectation. ‘What can you expect from kids like these? They have terrible home lives. We’re just happy to see them come in.’ Which is fine up to a point, but after that point it isn’t. If we never expect better from children, then that is where many of them will stay.
3. Cognitive dissonance- things are terrible here/ and I am responsible for improving them/ but they haven’t improved/ that makes it look like I am a failure/ I am not a failure/ I am a good person/ therefore this situation is too hard for anyone to fix/ I am a good person doing my best and this is ok

#aqa #History please rethink your papers! Cut out Korea, imperial Germany and stop changing the historic environment every year! Oh, and 16 different question stems is a nightmare. There is a reason the most common grade is a 3 🙄

I worked out that for most schools teaching the whole spec means moving onto a new separate piece of potentially examinable content about once every twenty minutes.
