I find it really bizarre that there are dozens of these Korean internet translation sites operating in different languages around the world. They translate posts from obscure incel communities that practically no one in Korea even uses, and even take individual posts with barely 20 views and sensationalize them as though they represent “K-netizens’ reactions.” They seem excessively obsessed with finding out what Koreans think and what kinds of topics they talk about every single day.

It’s like randomly selecting completely mundane posts from a community for Korean high school girls—things like “I’m jealous of my pretty friend” or “I don’t know how far I should go physically with my boyfriend”—translating them one by one, and then having foreigners read the posts and leave comments as though they were actually having a conversation with the Korean girl herself, discussing her post among themselves. The behavior itself feels genuinely creepy and bizarre to me.

Perhaps K-pop fans don’t actually like K-pop itself so much as they like the very existence of “Koreans who like K-pop.”

But by “like,” I don’t mean simple fondness or interest. It is more like an unsettling and peculiar fixation, in which all kinds of emotions—obsession, hatred, jealousy, and a sense of superiority—are tangled together.

They constantly monitor Korean online discourse and social issues, tracking what Koreans are saying day after day and trying to insert themselves far too deeply into what is happening in Korean society. Rather than simply consuming Korean culture, they seem to form a kind of parasocial-sociological relationship with Korea, endlessly observing and interpreting Korean society and even the everyday conversations of ordinary Koreans as though they were animals being watched inside a zoo enclosure.

In the end, Korea seems to have become something more than just the backdrop that produces K-pop for these people. It has become a vast object of social observation—something they feel compelled to watch, analyze, and react to every single day.
