The best advice I received as a hadith student: memorize scholars’ names, death dates, and regions. It helped me connect the dots.
I made this list to help students do the same. Learn a few names each week, revise regularly, and soon you’ll know them by heart.
In my graduate seminar on tribes and tribalism, we read Yossef Rapoport’s Becoming Arab, a genuinely thought-provoking book.
Its central arguments is that the supposedly ancient and continuous “Arabness” of Egypt and Greater Syria is, to a large extent, a later historical construction. As local populations (especially Copts and Jews) gradually converted to Islam, much later than the first centuries of Islam and for pragmatic rather than coercive reasons, they also increasingly came to describe and perform themselves as “Arab” through how they dressed, what they read, and, most fascinatingly, how they spoke Arabic.
Putting aside a few mild criticisms I have of the book and its main argument (for instance, there is virtually no discussion of how these communities understood and described themselves before they became “Arab”), I still think it is a must-read for anyone interested in the formation of ethnic, cultural, and social identities.
And there is definitely a huge need for a similarly ambitious study of “becoming Turk,” not taking Turkishness as a timeless or self-evident identity, but asking when, how, and under what historical circumstances people came to understand and describe themselves as “Turk.”

📍Tabanovce Köyü, Kuzey Makedonya 🇲🇰
Koca Mehmed Bey Camii
