Whereas Schutz’s artwork seems to not take a stance at all. Unless her argument is to evoke a sense of confusion. Her abstractive aesthetic could potentially speak to recirculate an image that no one expected to see again...
#ARTH287 Dana Schutz "Open Casket" painting of Emmett Till's mutilated body is so charged because it appears abstracted from the original point of having the casket open. Emmett Till's mother made an argument about the need for others to see her son's murdered body...
@michaelmeeksart I think the suggestion of people is there even if they are physically missing. The fact that the ladder is against the tree says it was placed there. I think this is another way to look at the long standing history of public executions.
#ARTH287 The image’s background reminds me of crops: potentially wheat and berries. Whereas the whiteness found in the foreground of the female figure’s head & breast perhaps speaks to the relationship between nutrient intake &outward expression. I’m most interested in her hand.
#ARTH287 Does anyone else see a record player disc that begins in the right-facing corner of the frame that fans out per each gradation of the artwork? I wonder if each layer constitutes an era...
#ARTH287 The New Negro & Harlem Renaissance Arts movements both embody linguistic & active forms of black empowerment as well as strains of identity collapse. I speculate as to y ‘The Harlem Renassiance’ outlived ‘The New Negro’ & ? whether HR remained b/c it’s less threatening?
@sarahkha111@AlyssaSutton21 I am not totally sure if this is just a discussion about art. Just because it is a work of art does not mean those who made it believe in what the messsage of thosewho endorsed its construction.
@williamarth2 I liked this idea as well. I’m not sure how one would go about this and what the execution of this task would like like. Do cut them down and drag them to one central location or just start over completely with new artists perspectives?
#ARTH287 The sky high version of John C. Calhoun’s statue in Marion Square (a prominent black area) in Charleston, S.C. reflected the increased tension between the black ppl who: lived there and destroyed it and the Ladies Calhoun Association who sought to preserve its presence.
#ARTH287 With the long lasting impacts of minstrel shows as depicted in “Ethnic Notions” I can definitely honor the work of Director Ryan Coogler’s multifaceted portrayals of contemporary African & black American decendants in his interpretation of Black Panther for this #BHM2018
#arth287 "Like Jacobs and Sojourner Truth, Lewis may have tried to redefine proper femininity in terms that would embody the tenets of freedom and make visually evident a new identity for the black female," (pg.173). It is clear that black and white womanhood are not the same.
#ARTH287 Morgan’s article made me think about the film: Imitation of Life (1957 remake). The background story was about a single middleclass white woman&daughter who had a black live-in. She baked good pancakes. The WW ends up patening & selling the recipe. The BW cooks w/ a :).
#ARTH287 Juan Logan’s reimagination of the mammy figure asks me to reconsider the Aunt Jemima syrup currently being sold off grocery store shelves. I wonder, who this product speaks to and what is reaffirmed when you buy a mass produced version of an ‘old black woman’s recipe?
Moutossamy-Ashe recalled her experience 'capturing' what she believed to be a dying society in the name of preservation on the Daufuskie Island: "They felt that every time I clicked my shutter that I was taking something away from them..." {?'s about exploitation & Art} #ARTH287
