@gmerc@KunNot7 if you want to get angry at someone for daring to disagree with you, that’s certainly a way you could interpret that sentence
obviously not. but there’s a difference in how much the elemental affinity is emphasized in a move’s mechanical identity
@gmerc@KunNot7 in most rpgs, the purpose of elemental attacks is that they are elemental. in pokemon, the element of an attack is just a trait; ex. there are 79 psychic moves with distinct properties. you can argue this wasn’t the case in Gen 1/2, but it was absolutely established by Gen 3
@gmerc@KunNot7 except the design philosophy behind pokemon’s type chart is fundamentally different in purpose and presentation compared to most other RPG element systems
@Grandis_Granva@badboyzradgurlz this would honestly be really smart if they leaned into it more, but it really doesn’t encourage much balance when every HM is either water-based or a generic physical move that everyone gets (except fly ofc)
@SummonerFlash none of this really affects a casual playthrough. the only difference is that your awesome water serpent can actually use the water moves it gets without that being super suboptimal
Learnsets are somewhat valid but I’m a full-on physical/special split hater these days. The idea that Pokemon can only be well designed if they’re firing STAB attacks off of their biggest attacking stat is stupid
@SummonerFlash they figured that the long-term strategy to giving new pokemon unique gameplay roles was through movesets, abilities, and typing. not through minute stat differences. because eventually you run out of those
@SummonerFlash this whole thing hinges on the idea that good pokemon post-PSS are all glass cannons minmaxed towards one attacking stat, but that’s just not the case. this is the most ubiquitous VGC mon of all time
@SummonerFlash there are stat spreads i could look at with 0 other context, and instantly tell you what pokemon that is. the only early ones i could do this for are the notoriously dogshit ones
@SummonerFlash in that case, i just don’t think older stat spreads were more diverse. the hoenn special is memed precisely because of how damn widespread it is
@SummonerFlash moveset homogenization in the newer games is because most moves have way higher distribution now. it has next to 0 relation to the pss, and would probably even be worse without it
@SummonerFlash yeah man it’s really effective to get that stab bonus off a 30 special attack stat. definitely not just outclassed by the same 3 normal type moves. this is more diverse or something
@itzthrow it’s always “oh the split makes pokemon design too homogenized“ like everyone firing off the same 3 normal type moves was somehow more diverse
Physical/Special split haters always want to argue using a stat spread/ability like mawile’s to bite a lairon to death for 9 turns is actually a viable strategy but will never utter a peep about how fun that is to do.
Trans art discourse is pointless cause the piece of "trans art" that resonated with me the most was made by a middle-aged Japanese dude who most likely didn't even originally intend it.
