I heard the sad news that @MTV shut down all continuous 24 music video stations after 44 years.

SO I took initiative to create MTV REWIND

I'll be constructing a massive playlist of custom youtube links to music videos for this player.

this was fun to use chatgpt to go down the rabbit hole of some of the most pernicious artist feuds in history at least, I think critiquing work is healthy if done productively....may such examples where that's not the case.

If you're looking for legendary artist-on-artist warfare, art history is full of it. Not just criticism, but genuine attempts to undermine rivals, destroy reputations, block commissions, and sometimes erase people from history altogether.

1. Gian Lorenzo Bernini vs. Francesco Borromini

The Baroque blood feud

This is probably the closest thing art history has to a mafia war.

Both dominated 17th-century Rome.
Bernini was charismatic, politically connected, favored by popes.
Borromini was brilliant but difficult and intensely private.
They fought over commissions, influence, and architectural philosophy.

Borromini believed Bernini was an overrated showman.

Bernini allegedly used his connections to sideline Borromini from major projects.

The rivalry became so poisonous that every success for one was perceived as a defeat for the other.

Many historians believe Borromini's growing isolation and professional frustrations contributed to his mental decline and eventual suicide.

2. Michelangelo vs. Leonardo da Vinci

The ultimate Renaissance beef

Florence basically turned them into opposing sports teams.

Leonardo was older, famous, elegant, intellectual.

Michelangelo was younger, abrasive, obsessive, and openly contemptuous.

One famous story recounts Leonardo encountering Michelangelo in public and ending up mocked by him in front of others.

Neither artist had much respect for the other's approach:

Leonardo thought Michelangelo's figures were excessive.

Michelangelo viewed Leonardo as someone who started grand projects but failed to finish them.
When Florence commissioned both men to paint battle scenes in the same government hall, the city essentially staged an artistic cage match.

Neither mural survives.

But the rivalry shaped the High Renaissance.

3. Pablo Picasso vs. Henri Matisse

Mutual admiration mixed with ruthless competition

Unlike many rivalries, they genuinely respected one another.

Yet they spent decades trying to outdo each other.

Every time Matisse discovered a new visual language, Picasso responded.

Every time Picasso reinvented himself, Matisse pushed elsewhere.

Friends described them as being in a constant artistic arms race.

Picasso once reportedly said that nobody looked at Matisse's work more carefully than he did.

The interesting part is that their rivalry was productive rather than destructive. They sharpened each other for fifty years.

4. Salvador Dalí vs. André Breton

The Surrealists try to expel their biggest star

Breton ran Surrealism almost like a political party.

Dalí was impossible to control.

The movement increasingly viewed him as:

narcissistic,

commercially motivated,

politically reckless.

Breton organized hearings and public condemnations.
Dalí responded by essentially saying:
Surrealism is me.

Breton even created an anagram nickname mocking him:
"Avida Dollars" ("greedy for dollars").

The movement attempted to excommunicate Dalí.

Dalí became richer and more famous than nearly all of them.

5. Caravaggio vs. Giovanni Baglione

The lawsuit from hell

Baglione painted in a style influenced by Caravaggio.

Caravaggio publicly ridiculed his work.

Not privately.

Publicly.

Repeatedly.

The insults became so vicious that Baglione sued him for defamation.

The court records read like Renaissance-era internet drama.

Artists testified against one another.

Accusations flew.

Reputations were attacked.

Baglione spent years writing about how much he disliked Caravaggio.

Caravaggio became immortal.

Baglione became remembered largely because he hated Caravaggio.

The Most Ruthless Example: Giorgio Vasari vs. Everyone He Didn't Like

Ironically, the biggest act of artistic sabotage may not have been by an artist's brush—but by a historian's pen.

Vasari wrote the influential book Lives of the Most Excellent Painters, Sculptors, and Architects.

Because it became the foundation of art history:

artists he loved became legends,

artists he disliked were minimized,

some were effectively written out of history for centuries.

That's arguably the most successful artistic sabotage ever committed.

He didn't destroy artworks.

He shaped who future generations remembered.

And in many ways, that's even more powerful.
The recurring pattern in all these stories is that artists rarely destroy each other through direct attacks. The most effective weapons have historically been:
Controlling commissions.

Controlling institutions.

Controlling criticism.

Controlling historical narratives.

The artists who suffer most are often not the least talented.....they're the ones who lose the story.
