@Plapse69 I knew him mostly as a swing guy and then eventually heard his Coltrane album and Money Jungle more recently off a rec. I haven’t heard much more of his second era stuff but I wanna hear that record where he duels with count Basie’s band. It sounds insane.
@bagagwaa I’ve been on a real Miles Davis kick the last year. He’s got so many different eras. On The Corner, Live Evil, and Bitches Brew have been on repeat. Great stuff if you like noisy, weird and experimental
@bagagwaa These two are from his post-swing era but still great starting points. Ellington and Coltrane is the big one. “In a sentimental mood” is a signature song. Money Jungle has Charles Mingus and Max Roach on it. More challenging and varied but still approachable & beautiful.
@LeoOD3@agraybee Luke does chill out as the trilogy progresses. I don’t remember his later arc having him whiny again but it’s been a while since I watched those sequels
@LeoOD3@agraybee Yeah the decision on how annoying to pitch your teen character is a deliberate but subjective one, which is why this is a nitpick. Im not saying it’s a plot hole or even hacky I just don’t like it. I couldn’t watch Licorice Pizza for more than 10 mins for the same reason.
@thinbluesublime@agraybee This always pissed me off. Guy with telekinesis and a laser sword: “Ah sorry can’t save your mom it’s against the rules to free slaves” No wonder he turned into a sociopath
Maybe not what OP was thinking of but this was/is called doom jazz/dark jazz/jazz noir. Bohren & Der Club of Gore, Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble, The Mount Fuji Doomjazz Corporation. I always thought Kayo Dot’s Coyote was in this vein albeit more unpleasant and experimental
