No, AAU status was a pre requisite but that wasn’t the motivation. They were added because they were a big national football brand (TV ratings) contiguous with the rest of the conference and they were a good cultural fit.

I want to hold on to a game that MATTERS TO ME every year even if we’re bad. I want to beat ISU! I don’t care if SEC fans don’t watch it. Everyone I know watches it.

Is the long term goal to just play 12 random teams with the ultimate goal to qualify for the playoffs (then lose) every 5-10 years? That’s why we’re playing? Because we’ll never win a natty. Conf championships are going away. Bowl games don’t matter.
