Is your ability to remember temporal lobe anatomy temporary?
You can see it best on coronal images
Centrally in the temporal lobe is the old allocortex (hippocampus, etc) that is preserved going back to rats
Laterally is the neocortex involved in the newer higher functions of the temporal lobe in humans
--Oldest part is the hippocampus. Remember Hippies are old!
-- Next to the hippocampus is the parahippocampal gyrus.
Remember older folks love to go in pairs. So this is the PAIR-ahippocampal gyrus—it pairs w/the old hippocampus
-- Next to the parahippocampal gyrus is the fusiform gyrus.
Fusiform gyurs bridges (some might say FUSES) the older part of the temporal lobe w/newer, neocortical structures
Lateral temporal cortex looks like a parfait with fruit on top!
--Heschl’s transverse gyrus forms the strawberry on tops.
Remember Heschl sounds like bushel—and bushels are full of fruit
Heschl is the fruit on top!!
--Parfait layers are the superior, middle, and inferior temporal gyrus
--Stem of the parfait glass is the fusiform gyrus
Stem of the parfait glass is fusiform in shape so it’s the fusiform gyrus!
