A yield sign admits of two approaches or philosophies.
One can approach the intersection expecting to have to stop. Or one can approach the intersection expecting to get to go.
@franzsherbert Unless you're a canon lawyer, maybe: the annual volumes of published decisions of the Roman Rota are famously still sold with uncut pages, making them somewhat a rite of passages for canonists.
A guy who worked for TI back in the day told me that after they created the first electronic hand calculator, they got a call from Bell Telephone.
The folks from Bell sounded uncertain and worried. You see, when they were creating the first push-button phone, they did extensive tests to determine the exact best pattern for the numerical buttons - the pattern that would be easiest for people to tap in the dark or by muscle memory.
But now they were concerned they’d completely blundered, because they saw that TI’s machine had the exact opposite layout.
“So,” they asked. “What did your tests show?”
The guys at TI just stared stupidly and said “Tests?”
Two canon lawyers have released a new English-language textbook on child welfare, drawing on a long-running interdisciplinary course at the University of Erfurt.

Not a lot of people understand this... but you actually don’t have to have an opinion about everything. You don’t have to decide if something is good or bad. Marcus Aurelius says limiting the amount of opinions we have is one of the most powerful things we can do in life.
In my head, I keep adding a personal subtitle to this article: "How I spent my summer vacation." 😀
Great to see this long-form coverage of the very exciting adventure our diocese has been embarked these past several months.
@crousselle Our cat was born is a machine shed. His mother and siblings were killed and eaten one by one by a raccoon: the farmer finally intervened when he realized there was only one kitten left, all alone. I think about that scenario anthropomorphically way too much.
@BackwardsFeet I have a particularly difficult time watching the Extended Edition version of this scene, because the pacing of the theatrical version is so perfect, and so deeply engrained in my expectations.
This is the best thing I have read in quite some time.
I've had many of these same thoughts, much less formed and articulated, floating in my own head for years, and I am so glad to see them so well presented. Much to ponder in this lengthy read.

@GregoryCaridi My recollection is that was more or less the conservative position all they way back in my childhood in the 1980s already. The then-NCCB was (in the circles I grew up in) generally spoken of as a liberal force, pushing things like nuclear disarmament and social justice.
