The turning point for rare diseases, which affect >300 million people around the world.
A call to get rid of its many structural obstacles, to consider it as molecular surgery unlike drug treatments

NEW: a common response to reports of hospitals struggling this winter is "it’s no different to a bad flu season!"
I’ve tracked down historical data on flu ICU admissions, including winter 2017-18, a record high.
Here’s how England’s Covid winter compares to a bad flu season 📹
Israel's Covid-19 end game: Lockdown + Rapid vaccination
Israel is the first to enter a 3rd lockdown but is also #2 in vaccines per capita with 2.4% vaccinated and a daily date of 1.1%
This strategy may end our Covid-19 fatalities by March. We modeled how this may play out

#gemeinsam
Today our editorial on the impact of the COVID-19 crisis on life scientists was published. A huge thanks to our colleagues for contributing to the survey we conducted on the impact of COVID-19 on the daily work of biologists.

@hendrikstreeck Regarding transmission rate in a household: is it possible to separate between households were the primary infected person knew they were positive and those who not? Would be interesting to see if in-house isolation is effective.
This is really interesting - well done!

Any quantification available for supp fig. 2? Can someone explain at which AB dilution you talk about a specific immune reaction and when is it just random binding? @c_drosten@hendrikstreeck
@ManuelMastel@hsalis Ok this is next level! But I’m pessimistic that diagnostic labs can implement this into their routine... maybe research labs should help!
@ManuelMastel@c_drosten Seems to work, but I am wondering if anybody in Germany is doing this. 64 samples is a lot, but I guess even pooling of 5-10 samples would increase testing capacity a lot.
