The Greenland debacle means, very simply, that unless Europe 5x or 10x its investment in military capabilities and take radical measures to grow its economies and, crucially, the financial and energy markets to drive growth, then Europe will truly be at risk.

“We are already doing it” isn’t sufficient unless perhaps you’re Poland and Sweden. Defence spending probably needs to be 5+ % of GDP for the next decade with conscription reintroduced to help shake Europe’s cultural malaise.

To defend a liberal, open European way of life, the continent will need to militarise, dramatically ramp up help to Ukraine to stop Russia, including with planes and boots on the ground.

Europe will need to aggressively go for growth, even at the expense of health, welfare and social concerns. The time to balance everything is over. If you don’t have growth and security, no amount of health policy will benefit your population.

Fretting about the planet is nonsense when you can’t heat homes, secure trade or if you’re cowering from Russian drone attacks on your airports, transport and energy. That’s the honest truth.

@NaijaFlyingDr Fair enough - I agree that some VCs push startups to aggressive growth, but I’d suggest the bigger issue is how a lot of capital goes to inexperienced founders with limited oversight, which can lead to wasteful decisions. Different sides of the same coin, really. We agree? :)
