Last night, on the call with the Mayor’s Office to Combat Antisemitism, we were advised that their comprehensive plan didn’t even include the word Zionism, or Zionist Jews, because “Zionism is a political ideology.” Zionism is not a political ideology, it’s part of the ethnic and religious identity of the majority of American Jews.
Plus, “the Mayor’s plan to combat Antisemitism fails to address one key question: How do we combat the hateful rhetoric that rolls out of the Mayor’s own mouth—and the violence against Jewish New Yorkers he is fueling?”
@normativefact@CitedNeed idk if you have read Benjamin's Critique of Violence but he talks about how the problem with natural law assumes that moral means result in moral ends, and how with positive law, moral ends mean the means were moral. but the point he makes is that neither of these actually work.
@normativefact@CitedNeed the problem is there is no standard by which we consider something to be too immoral — other than law itself or our own personal preference.
@maplebonk@_giacomo_volpe_ all it shows is that they have the "capability" to be more targeted about their operations. there is a middle ground between "5-year operation" and "blowing up neighborhoods"
@normativefact@CitedNeed the reason i think it is immoral is that i think its unfair to put the burden those specific individuals. Why them and not someone else?
the more i saw the comment the more i just realize that the supports for palestine are no more than antisemitism for at least 40% of yall, fighting hate with hate, you guys are just repeating the toxic cycle that will definitely end well for you and not the ones at play of course
@normativefact@CitedNeed just because someone else does something more immoral/illegal doesn't mean we should do immoral things to prevent them from doing said immoral thing. i don't see that as all of a sudden making it moral. this is a philosophical disagreement that i don't think we will agree on.
@HillBofPI@_giacomo_volpe_ nowhere did i argue it would be the exact same operation. or even remotely similar. but it does show that israel knows how to target more precisely than obliterating neighborhoods.
@normativefact@CitedNeed i am not making a moral judgement because i don't think politics is necessarily moral. I think it should be moral but morals are often a question of lived experience and personal perspective. i do not think it is moral. however, i can assess the legality.
If you think anti-Zionism = anti-Semitism, you’ve lost the plot. Simultaneously, if you think combatting genuine anti-semitism = supporting Zionism, you too have lost the plot and are actively aiding the problematic connotation being pushed rn. There’s no room for anti-Semitism on the left or in society more broadly. Simple as that.
