When that sense of identification fades, we begin to believe the universe exists for us rather than with us. And when that orientation dissolves, when that reverence disappears, clouds darken the skies and we step into (to borrow a phrase) a sunless, soulless day of despair.
We live in a society where either this sense of awe is disappearing, or we are growing numb to it, but both have equally harmful consequences. When we loose a capacity for awe, and the reverence that accompanies it, we grow disoriented.
As Octavio Paz reflected, “One of man’s oldest gestures, repeated daily from the beginning of time, is to look up and marvel at the starry sky. This act of contemplation frequently ends in a feeling of fraternal identification with the universe."
4. It should be difficult. It should challenge the heart, soul, and mind. It should ask students to stand at the edge of what they know, secure enough to leap, yet uncertain enough to feel the quickening fear of not quite making it.
3. It should be personalised, not in the hollow sense that all things must orbit the child, as though the planets, and the stars were arranged around a single sun but in the deeper sense where the child comes to see themselves among a wider constellation of others.
A credo for education in a world of change:
1. Education should be relevant. It should echo not in the manner in which sound reverberates in an echo chamber, but provocatively with wonder and relevance
2. It should provide answers to questions that spark even more questions. It should never satisfy the quench for learning, but leave one thirsty for more.
The Aga Khan has died. I felt whenever I was fortunate enough to be with him a great warmth of spirituality. What he has done to better the public good across the world is unparalleled. He was a master at bringing governments, institutions and people together to make lives better
A few reflections on education, newcomer populations, and what this means for a world in which difference is a growing fact of life in societies, not just in Canada, but across the world. #education#pluralism#newstudents#bced

A major element of teaching with examples is being clear about what something is and what it isn’t so they learn a “general case” rather than isolated facts. Here are five principles from Direct Instruction:
1. Wording Principle: use the same wording whenever possible.
"We have fallen into a mythology that the ability to operate a device translates into the sophistication needed to evaluate the information that device yields." from CBS News, "Stanford Research Shows Tech-Savvy Teens are Still Falling for Fake Videos." https://t.co/J2Y27JE5af
A writer is 90% craftsman and 10% wordsmith, and craft is about revelation. The soul and authenticity of the art should be why you write: don’t just write because you want to perform, write because you have something valuable to share.

On a conservative and progressive approach to tradition: "A progressive tradition gives us the tools to balance our own achievements and the achievements of our time on the one hand, and the value and authority of tradition on the other." https://t.co/SWd6A5epkm via @aeonmag
