Accountability IS possible with the following mechanisms in place:

No more political parties – independent candidates only

When you remove politics from council, you remove party loyalties, party ideology, party conflict and party funder influence. This will also change how the mayoral committee is selected. Additionally, we propose that council can object to mayoral committee appointments under certain conditions.

Councillor recall

There will be a process available to all voters to remove their councillor or mayor at any time if they are negligent in their duties. The IEC, with its new mandate, will administer this process and run a by-election to elect a new representative. What makes this an even more foolproof process is if YOU too are willing to stand for public office, especially if the candidates around you fall short of your expectations for what a representative should be.

You vote for the mayor directly

Mayors will no longer be elected by the municipal council; the mayor will be voted in by you! You can run for mayor without being affiliated to a party. This will widen the pool of options. Instead of only having party-captured and compromised individuals run for public office, we open up the process to good and law-abiding citizens to take the lead and clean up our municipalities with the citizens’ support.

Make wards smaller

In this new system, political parties won’t have any official recognition in government. Currently municipal councils have proportional representation. This means that half of the seats in council are for parties, while the other half are for ward councillors. Because we want to implement a system without any parties, instead of making councils smaller, we keep their size, halve the wards and double the ward councillors. This means that the councillor now has a smaller constituency and more easily sees to residents’ concerns. This won’t incur any extra cost as the PR councillor seats are simply changed to ward councillor seats.

@CityofCT Now we need proper consequences for their actions. I vote chop off their left ear on the 2nd offence, hand on the 3rd, no jail time as that's a waste of taxpayers money just to send them to crime university.
