The older I get, the more I realize that anxiety feeds on idleness. You’re anxious because you’re not doing anything. When you take action, you starve anxiety of the oxygen it needs to survive. The answer is found in the action.
Average builds you quietly, spikes open the doors.
Back in 2015, I spent days manually going through 1500 IIT Bombay CVs to shortlist a few for the company I was part of.
Each was evaluated across ~5 sections, 3 points each.
- Average work? 1 point.
- Good work? 3 points.
- An exceptional spike? +2 bonus points in that section.
So:
- Average in all 5 sections = 5 points.
- One exceptional spike, rest average = 9 points.
- Two spikes = 13 points (almost always shortlisted).
That exercise taught me something I’ve carried into business and life:
People choose you for your spikes.
Of course, the slow, steady improvement over your average work matters for long-term compounding.
But without a spike to start with, there’s no initial pull.
The spike is the magnet; the compounding work is what makes the magnet stronger over time.
In entrepreneurship, you don’t need to be the best at everything (and it's practically impossible to be). You need to be world-class at something i.e. a product feature, an experience, a culture.
That’s what makes customers/partners/employees choose you.
That’s what creates disproportionate opportunities.
That's what opens unique doors for you.
Do enough average work to refine your thinking and earn your intuition, then pour all your energy into the thing that can truly set you apart.
Can't figure out what's so funny for social media about the Ashwin and Harbhajan interview. IMO, it's such a mature conversation between two players with the same skillset whose careers overlapped. Professional jealousy among sportsmen is just natural. A spot in the playing XI is an opportunity towards so much more, not just in one's career but in life. And when someone else gets it ahead of you, it's natural to feel upset or even jealous. These athletes are human beings at the end of the day and being competitive is their second nature. They give their all to get a chance to represent their country at the highest level. And most of them make peace with the snub sooner or later. In Dhawan's book, he openly writes about how he cooked up scenarios in his head that Shubman's form goes down in the months leading up to the 2023 World Cup and he gets recalled to the squad and get a chance to play the 2023 World Cup. But he has been so magnanimous and supportive of Gill as well.
If you want the index to be made on the basis of your subjective views on loss making companies, high PE companies, new companies etc. you are basically saying you want to invest actively.
Please do.
Waiting for a day when the Budget is presented with a PowerPoint presentation, showing the performance of previous schemes with graphs, and outlaying new schemes. Spouting large numbers sounds jarring.
Budget2025: Thread starts here.
Expect bad attempts at jokes. Do not expect tax cuts. I hope there isn't too much poetry, though I'll quote cartoon movies liberally.
Another reason why foreign portfolio investors shouldn't be taxed in India. We can't be the only country that taxes foreign etfs but Indian etfs get no tax.
We will attract a lot more investors that way. And we do need an Indian tax deferred account 401k style for individuals
Exactly this:
Every Indian vacation feels like an exercise in avoiding negative experiences
instead of relaxing, you feel like you are playing a high stakes game, the instagram pics look good but in the background you are merely hoping you can go back home and actually rest
I've convinced myself & my friend circle that I don't like travel, but I think that's a notion I've developed because I don't want to travel in India
it's not about travel, it's about travel in a particular geography
Techbros hate MBA.
They keep inventing new Startups, courses, job positions, internships to replace the good old MBA. But all of those efforts fail within 1-2 yrs. The good old MBA survives.
According to MVDR 2017, you should not park near turnings, and this is the reason.
By the time a car driver can see whether the road is clear, His bonnet will already enter the road and can cause bad accidents.
When you’re driving a car, every act of yours has many repercussions…
