best work project this year: breaking down the insane 8000-mile supply chain bringing Indian mangos to NYC this season, ft anon kingpins...and George W. Bush.
getting an Indian mango in the city is weirdly complicated: you have to join a secret WhatsApp, await a drop, Venmo a rando, and run to a bodega on the Lower East Side. They're $50 a box and they sell out within minutes. (So worth it).
But that doesn't stop desis. India produces half of the world's mango supply, with 1000 varieties and regional advocates as intense as NBA fans. Still, almost none leave the country. Importing them actually used to be a federal crime!
That's changing, with lots of janky operations and Indian-Americans shelling out cash to get them in any way possible. I had so many q's — who runs these WhatsApp groups? How do they get these mangos? How much money do they make? And how are they suddenly legal to import? (The answer traces back to a weird a$$ trade deal with George W. Bush exchanging Harley Davidsons for mangos.)
It's pretty much impossible to enjoy watching this short as much as I enjoyed making it, but here you are: https://t.co/tE3XkaVzUZ
Mayor Daniel Lurie’s approval ratings are high because cable news stopped broadcasting crime panic stories in San Francisco.
Data shows little to no change in crime & homelessness. But people’s perceptions have changed in the absence of 24/7 propaganda.
it’s so hard to love california when the state stubbornly refuses to change off our downhill path. greatest state in the union and we’re coasting straight into a hole. becerra has no vision or values, but he held a lot of positions, so that makes him fit to be governor?
I truly don’t know what to make of people like this. You purposely ignore where candidates stand on issues and go for the easy “MAAAH HE’S A BILLIONAIRE!!!!”. Becerra had no grounding message other than his race and Trump. His plans were vague, and he didn’t even explain those well! Like please be fucking serious here.
The beauty of California is that whether you vote for the Democrat or the Republican for governor in 2026, both candidates plan to kill rail projects and build no housing.
