digital humanities, (early) american studies, material culture & vernacular architecture, libraries & museums. learning yiddish. union president. tweets my own.
some personal news as they say: i am proud to have been elected president of my union, afscme local 2910, the library of congress professional guild. today we had our first eboard meeting, and i am especially proud of my talented colleagues and the good work we will do together!
@IsabellaRosner this immediately makes me question whether the standard interpretation of lay's physique in the only known portrait--he was a cripple so looks fragile and withered etc.--also needs some additional attention. comparing the two portraits, wow, so very much to think about.
@Viornagirl@TheRealNumber6@greatgreyowls@north0fnorth yes, the brick in the original photo is done in common bond, which is the top option in this photo, but there can be more than 3 rows of stretchers between the header rows. the fewer headers you use the fewer bricks you need so it's a calculation of cost vs strength vs decoration
@zunguzungu@GordonTurkey true story: i broke my right ring finger as a teenager and couldn't bend the pinky separately after that. then one day a couple of years ago, eg. decades later, i stubbed the ring finger on something and felt a little pop, and poof, i have independent motion of my pinky again.
@Boston1775 @GraceHOsborn could be! i see the word divers a lot in accounts of this time period and the note being an apparent afterthought in its placement made me think of it here.
@zunguzungu long ago mark sample @samplereality narrated a whole fictive event in real time, his own personal war of the worlds. I've also seen threads that end with: if you liked this story please visit my profile for more, but I don't recall names.
@oldenoughtosay look at early history of puritans, quakers, and in general non-conformists in 17th century england. then look at early pennsylvania and early rhode island.
@alexrmoskowitz brown is actually in the ivy league, so they would have accepted you too. but thank you for knowing your limits and sticking to just three of them. your moderation in this is duly noted.
@KWHulcher @fakehistoryhunt old photos are usually extremely clear if taken in focus. negatives were usually large and grain was fine. exception is if something moved during a longexposure. scans of old photos may be blurry depending on dpi and quality of scanner or if the size was reduced for web, socmed.
