This has happened before. On SAFM..MANY years ago. A caller, not even a guest, made some defamatory comments about Blade Nzimande and the ANC. They went beyond commentary and critique. The presenter just sat there like a statue. Didn't counter anything, didn't correct anything. Blade rightly took it to the BCCSA. And won.

I remember this case because the industry didn't even react. I went to my boss at 702 and persuaded her of the enormity of the case and implications for talk radio. This case meant as a talkshow host your duty no longer ends with challenging newsmakers who lie and misrepresent facts, you NOW ALSO had a duty to subject callers to the same challenge. It was significant in that we could not claim that we are not responsible for what our callers say. If their comments were inflammatory, defamatory and untruthful, we had to set the record straight instead if "thanks for the call."
My view was that the case warranted an extra layer of training and strategies- possible responses especially when you as the presenter are not sure of the claims..what do you say? We needed tools. My boss said "Good, Miss Editorial, go and design the workshop, find the right trainers and let's do it." It was a long time ago. We had a great, challenging workshop.

These things matter. Broadcasting is a very powerful platform. You can't sit there like a Zombie and allow the platform to be hijacked for nefarious reasons. It is a betrayal of editorial standards and an insult to listeners. But we are in an era of influencers versus hosts with sound editorial training.
