"It's a privilege to be involved in an international liberation movement. And it's a privilege to be recognised by Palestinian prisoners themselves as comrades in the shared struggle. And that we are inheriting a long legacy of resistance that goes all the way back to my grandfather. Also named Saeed Taji Farouky, arrrested in 1938 by the British authorities for his involvement in resistance." @Pal_action

What a surprise! In a article for the New York Times, @jeffgoodell predicts 13,000 deaths in Phoenix in a heatwave + blackout scenario (and 800,000 hospitalised).
A climate scientist called me "dumb" last week for my 1.6 million viewed tweet that 12% of Phoenix would die of extreme heat in the 2030s due to the exponential increase in temperatures. In amongst the torrent of abusive comments from inhabitants of the great American nation, one lone voice stood out. It pointed out that obviously, my prediction was an underestimate because, as I keep reminding those willing to understand basic human biology - human bodies die en mass at a certain tipping point temperature called the wet bulb effect - the nuclear moment of the 21st century.
What the NYT article implies but does not make explicit is what happens when a blackout occurs whilst the temperature rises above the prediction of 90-113F. At this temperature range "in Phoenix, about 800,000 people — roughly half the population — would need emergency medical treatment for heat stroke and other illnesses. The flood of people seeking care would overwhelm the city’s hospitals. More than 13,000 people would die."
So, obviously at somewhere between 113C and say 133C, depending on the humidity, effectively all those 800,000 people will die (technically in 6 hours) to say nothing of all deaths due to the secondary social effects of riots, overwhelmed hospitals, and roaming death-loving fascists - the long thick tail of mass trauma raging through time and space.
Get it yet? The point is not whether things are exactly going to pan out like this or not in Phoenix (and in 1000 other cities around the world). The point is that risking it by allowing your government to roll the dice on more emissions is the greatest act of total fucking stupidity in the infinity of the universe.
Because remember - all this shit, once it starts, never stops.
Self-respect demands resistance.
