❤️SHE MATTERS: ERICA HAY!❤️
“She was the most beautiful mother you would ever meet. She did everything for everyone and always made sure her girls came first.”
Mum-of-four Erica Hay died in a suspicious house fire at her home in Warnbro, Western Australia, on Friday.
Her male partner ran from the blaze with a three-year-old child - today police are questioning him.
Officers have confirmed they are treating Erica’s death as a homicide.
Erica is the 32nd Australian woman killed this year and the 12th woman lost to violence in April.
The 30-year-old had only been in a relationship with the man for three or so months.
“Now those poor girls (Erica’s daughters) are without a mother for the rest of their lives because some evil person (allegedly) took that away from them,” a good friend of Erica’s told a media outlet today.
“She did everything for those girls, no matter how bad she was feeling.
“She always made sure that those girls had everything.”
The killing of Erica in the midst of widespread outrage at the ongoing slaughter of Australian women shows how far we still have to go before gendered violence is erased.
This weekend, women from all walks of life are raising their voices in unison, shining a light on violence against women.
As I write, the lives of 32 Australian women have been erased in 2024.
Eleven were allegedly killed by their current or former partners.
A further five women were allegedly killed by other family members.
While 9 of the women were allegedly murdered by people they knew (but who were not family members).
The last eight women were killed by strangers.
The youngest woman was just 22 years old. The oldest was 81.
Some had disabilities and/or chronic illnesses. These women came from all cultures - all sections of society.
Like Erica, 20 of the victims were mothers and 31 of the 32 women killed this year, were allegedly lost to male violence.
I cannot be more clear on this – gendered violence is the key cause of femicide in Australia.
We women are marching this weekend because it is time to accept that violence against women is not a woman’s problem to fix.
We women shoulder the burden of organising rallies. We’re the ones lobbying governments for DV funding and support services.
It's women who are rolling out petitions, pushing for changes to criminal legislation to keep our sisters safe.
It's left to women to document lives lost.
And it’s women who almost always pick up the pieces after violence.
We need men to stand with us - but more importantly we need men to take action because without buy-in from males we won't close the chapter on violence.
We can’t change the story for Erica – or the other women killed this year and in years past.
We must make tomorrow's story different because if we don't, more women’s lives will be lost.
Please, let's make Erica's life matter.
RIP ERICA HAY! ❤️

I document ALL unlawful deaths of women and children, regardless of perpetrator gender or relationship between the person killed and the accused. This means not every death is due to domestic and family violence. Australians are also killed by strangers, friends, colleagues, neighbours and other people known to them.

@belinduhpyne So cool that the bros on here need to question this story. Note lads that not a single woman has questioned @belinduhpyne
We know this shit is real.
@GlennPlumb2 @steve_arama @elscarta@GeorgeIsa1@mark16pg Did you miss the bit where a judge said quite clearly that he raped her? Or does that upset your ‘good bloke’ narrative?
Consent is not a grey zone.
Anyone who has heard their ‘mate’ describe similar encounters, who have made the jokes about getting her drunk enough, who have seen friends go too far and not stepped in - enough. On the balance of probabilities, you know a rapist too
