Nigeria’s demographic trends underscore the urgent need for action. In his opening session, Dr Ejike Oji, Chair MC, AAFP, stressed that the Health Sector Renewal Initiative presents a unique opportunity to recalibrate efforts and ensure that family planning is integral to strengthening the country’s health system.
He asserts that this is key to securing a healthier and more prosperous future for all Nigerians.

D. Ejike further emphasises why Nigeria must remain committed to sustaining its family planning efforts and the immense benefits.
He reiterates, "Family planning is not just about meeting targets; it’s about transforming lives by empowering women to make informed decisions about their health and futures. It enables women to take control of their reproductive choices, fostering personal, social, and economic empowerment.

Despite the progress, more needs to be done." says Dr Funmilola Ola-Olorun. Nigeria’s family planning vision for 2030 aims to achieve a modern contraceptive prevalence rate of 27%, up from the current 15%. Recent DHS and PMA studies show progress: Lagos increased from 17% to 26%, and Kano from 5% to 14% in a decade.
She highlights the need for annual 2% growth, increased funding, and collaboration to meet these goals. The high unmet need for family planning and reliance on traditional methods must be addressed to ensure success.

Prof. Sunday Adedini stresses the need to integrate family planning into maternal, newborn, and child health (MNCH) programs to achieve the FP2030 goals.
He highlights the critical link between Nigeria’s family planning efforts and reducing maternal mortality, emphasising the importance of a holistic approach to improving health outcomes.
#NFPC2024
Prof. Rhoda Mundi highlights the urgent need to ensure family planning is included in funding allocations at all levels, stressing that achieving the set family planning goals will remain a challenge without dedicated and consistent funding.
She calls for a stronger commitment from stakeholders, noting that family planning is essential to driving progress in health, reducing maternal mortality, and fostering national development.

What is wrong with attaching a condom to a bottle of beer?
Prof. Oladapo Ladipo argues that this approach could help create awareness about the importance of family planning and increase its acceptance. Linking condoms to everyday products like beer could normalise their use and open up conversations about sexual health in more accessible and relatable ways.
Great idea, Prof.👏👏
