The most productive members of society face incentives to work less, invest elsewhere, or structure their affairs to avoid the confiscatory rates. Meanwhile, the tax code rewards consumption over savings and punishes the very risk-taking that drives innovation.

The moral case is even clearer. Your income represents the voluntary exchange between you and others who value your work. The government has no legitimate claim to a higher percentage simply because you've succeeded in creating more value. Graduated taxation amounts to legalized theft that increases with your economic virtue.
