The minerals needed to power clean energy transitions are getting cheaper, but it’s not all good news.
Lower mineral prices are benefitting consumers & affordability, but they’re also providing a headwind for new investment.

I've been following the @IEA 's work for a long time, and - in a world where most good research is behind paywalls, or is tainted by vested interests (or both) - I find it incredible how much good quality free and open data and analysis they now provide. Bravo 👏
This summer, explore @IEA's wealth of free data & analysis on major energy topics. Some of our key reports so far in 2024 👇

Participation of female athletes at the Olympics:
Athens 1896 - 0%
Paris 2024 - 50%
It took more than a century, but the Paris 2024 Olympics are set to be the first in history to achieve full gender parity, with equal numbers of male and female athletes! That's pretty awesome.
Declines in critical mineral prices have made it harder to attract new investment
In 2023, spending on mining critical minerals rose by 10%, while exploration spending increased 15%.
This growth is still healthy, but slower than in 2022 ➡️ https://t.co/V0OvnIiQ9a
On 5 Dec, @IEA will convene leaders from governments, the energy & tech sectors and civil society for our Global Conference on Energy & AI
This will be a key step in our new "Energy for AI & AI for Energy" initiative to assess the implications of this transformative technology
Copper supplies have to motor if the world is to adequately decarbonise.
On this Exchange podcast, the @IEA’s Tae-Yoon Kim joined @gfhay to lay out the challenges that need to be overcome if the private sector is going to make that happen.

Geothermal energy can play an increasing role in energy systems worldwide as new technologies emerge
In November, @IEA will release a new report on The Future of Geothermal Energy, mapping out how to unlock its benefits for energy security, emissions reductions & job creation

The latest IEA report, Strategies for Affordable and Fair Clean Energy Transitions, shows how putting the world on track to meet net zero emissions by 2050 requires additional investment but also reduces the operating costs of the global energy system by more than half over the next decade compared with a trajectory based on today’s policy settings. The net result is a more affordable and fairer energy system for consumers.

Critical minerals are those that are vital to clean energy technologies that will dominate the future of energy.
Here's where these minerals are found to be naturally occurring, and where they are refined.
What do you notice? China dominates the refining of all of them.
New @IEA analysis on #SUVs with @ApostolosPetro1: SUVs made up 48% of global car sales in 2023, with shares increasing in both advanced & emerging/developing economies. SUVs accounted for >20% of last year's annual growth in global energy-related CO2. https://t.co/C1tySPM3HB
Tomorrow, we’re releasing a new special report on Strategies for Affordable & Fair Clean Energy Transitions
Its 1st-of-a-kind analysis looks at the costs & benefits of the shift to clean energy & how to ensure that clean technologies are available to all: https://t.co/fIlXstlbJN
SUVs are setting new sales records each year — & so are their emissions
If SUVs were a country, they would be the world’s 5th largest emitter of CO2

The affordability of energy, and in particular clean energy, has been the subject of a lot of conversation since the onset of the 2022 energy crisis. This Thursday, @IEA will launch a major global study on it, throwing light on inequities and challenges to affordability.
Critical minerals are the future of the energy system. They are everywhere, in batteries, solar and wind equipment, and more. Here’s @IEA’s first ever study with demand and supply outlooks for 6 key minerals (Li, Ni, Co, graphite, Cu, rare earths). 👇🏽
