@RobertSecundus@KrystalWolfyAlt well I was replying to you and the way you framed it to me.
“they don’t work to preserve capitalism” suggests that what “they” build isnt capitalism, but it is precisely. neofeudalism, technofeudalism, isn’t separate from capitalism, but characteristics of a stage of it.
@RobertSecundus@KrystalWolfyAlt whatever you or Varoufakis want to call this stage of capitalism, we got to stop pretending it isn’t exactly the natural progression in capitalism. Believing that if we just turned it back to how it was in (insert year) this wouldn’t eventually happen again is not realistic
Sports media is failing fans.
Two months ago, the NBA and MLB had players and coaches indicted by the federal government for placing bets on games. In previous eras, this would be a crisis.
Now? Crickets.
The last time the NBA faced a true gambling scandal with referee Tim Donaghy, the media hammered the NBA day after day. Sports media put regular pressure on the leagues for answers on how they would address concerns about the integrity of games.
Too many sports media outlets are compromised today. Sports gambling funds too much of the industry for media outlets to put too much heat and pressure on the leagues for gambling scandals. Betting odds are on TV broadcasts.
79 percent of sports fans say that recent scandals have shaken their trust in the NBA.
90 percent are worried about corruption across sports.
75 percent believe corruption is more widespread than the NBA.
If fans can't trust that games are clean and the media doesn't ask hard questions, what are we even watching?
The urgency to cover sports gambling scandals doesn't exist in the same way that it used to.
If this happened in 2008, it would've led SportsCenter and every sports publication for months. Now, it barely makes a ticker.
@MuditaJason@trapicanajayce@2Bogan2Lastard@darlingube I'm not saying you did :)
I just think there's a fair argument to be made whether it's defeatism or not when you point people to big systemic problems that need fixing. Also trying to spark some thoughts on how far certain individual burdens can take you in achieving big change
@MuditaJason@trapicanajayce@2Bogan2Lastard@darlingube 2 -> We could all drive (and buy) electric cars, and the adaptation of the market to chase that profit, the subsequent production, would still degrade the planet.
it's precisely an example of how *just* doing individual actions of pattern alone wouldn't work.
@MuditaJason@trapicanajayce@2Bogan2Lastard@darlingube think of it like current day companies trying to achieve "net zero". it's usually about doing some things better, or often some silly thing that will only, mathematically, "offset" their emissions, while, ofc, still doing the same type of production that downgrades the planet ->
