Although not at all surprising, I'm continually amazed at what happens when you give curious & smart people access to a centralized trove of cleaned, well-structured data. Democratize your data!
@Patticus I have hired people who followed up and those who didn't. In my experience, patterns emerge; it shows up elsewhere in their work - those who followed up were more conscientious in their work, and on balance, better performers. YRMV
The notion that future is a commons, and one that is best cared for in the present is both fantastically thrilling but also nerve wracking.
Stewardship of the future is one of those things that’s non-deferrable.
You carry the yoke, now, today. You build it now, today.
@tree_rescuer@martindsouza@connor_mc_d It's the lure of "massive profits" that provides the incentive to discover new vaccines/drugs, which take years to develop, and most of which fail. And, what is meant by "investments are covered"? Breakeven? Cost plus X%? Whittle it down too much and will destroy incentives.
@joelkallman@OracleAPEX Perhaps these words from Andy Warhol will be of some comfort: "Don't pay any attention to what they write about you. Just measure it in inches." ;-)
@connor_mc_d This puzzles me as well. SQL see weird, but if you can sling java, C++, python, etc., you can easily pick up quite powerful SQL skills in a weekend. Learning SQL is like learning to type - it pays massive dividends over the course of your career esp. in quantitative roles.
@hollymathnerd It's troubling that a single organization has so much power. The alternative of forcing private citizens/organizations to provide services against their will is equally troubling, no?
@iamdevloper@connor_mc_d With low-code tools like Oracle APEX, the "buy vs. build" math can change quite significantly, making the decision less obvious...#orclapex
