everything about the UK is terrifying. jailing activists against genocide for 40 years, banning young people from accessing social media websites and talking to one another, rampant ugly racism and poverty, forcing everyone to upload their ID to TALK to other people, it's scary!
so much sympathy for today's kids. every aspect of their lives has been impoverished, there are no spaces for them, everything is prohibitively expensive, the planet is dying, they're being repeatedly infected, and the solution is apparently to further isolate them digitally.
when i was in secondary & sixth form i rarely attended classes bc of disabilities, hospital stays & social services. educational content on youtube SAVED me & allowed me education at a russell group uni. this is dooming all kids suffering in abusive homes & disabled children
🚨 NEW: Under-16s in the UK will be banned from the following 10 social media apps
TikTok
YouTube
Snapchat
Instagram
X
Reddit
Facebook
Twitch
Kick
Threads
doing this without investing in kid-friendly public spaces and programmes makes no sense whatsoever. all this is gonna do is push kids to use more fringe and unregulated social media apps
In the UK, over 30% of children live in poverty, and we are supposed to believe that it is social media that is making them unhappy. I mean look, I wouldn't mind if social media was totally annihilated, but I'd prefer it if we annihilated child poverty first.
People making the point that this is about creeping authoritarianism aimed at adults, which it is, but the ongoing crusade for "parent's rights" e.g. to reaffirm that children are the property of their parents and deserve zero autonomy whatsoever is also a crucial aspect of this.
@JGreen022833017@itrainsstardust thats being a bit nit-picky for a tweet. it will doom a lot of children who use youtube for educational content. and thats *enough* to warrant anger towards this.
