Johannes Vermeer – The Art of Painting

Vermeer never sold this painting – it was his absolute favorite. After he died, his wife Catharina fought hard to keep it away from the creditors.

The woman posing is Clio, the muse of history, with her laurel wreath and trumpet. The big map on the wall shows the Netherlands – Vermeer is basically saying Dutch painting deserves its place in history.
