🚨 18C: THE HIGH COURT MUST DEFEND POLITICAL FREEDOM

Pauline Hanson has now taken her Section 18C battle to the High Court of Australia, seeking leave to appeal the Federal Court ruling over her comments about Greens Senator Mehreen Faruqi.

This case matters far beyond Pauline Hanson.

🗣️ It is about whether Australians are genuinely free to speak about politics, immigration, race and national identity — even when what they say is offensive.

⚖️ Section 18C makes it unlawful to engage in conduct reasonably likely to “offend, insult, humiliate or intimidate” someone because of race, colour or national or ethnic origin.

The Federal Court has upheld its application in this case.

But from a libertarian perspective, 18C should be repealed.

🔹 Free speech is not a right to say only things that others find acceptable.

🔹 Political debate inevitably involves ideas that offend, anger and upset people.

🔹 The proper response to offensive political speech is more speech — argument, criticism and rebuttal — not government-appointed judges deciding which political expression has gone too far.

🔹 Individuals should be responsible for what they say, but the state should not become the arbiter of acceptable opinion.

🔹 Laws against genuine threats, violence and incitement can protect people without creating a broad prohibition on speech merely because it may offend or insult.

🗽 LIBERTARIANISM STARTS WITH THE INDIVIDUAL'S FREEDOM TO THINK, SPEAK AND ARGUE.

We don't have to like Pauline Hanson's words.

We don't have to agree with them.

We don't even have to defend them.

But we should defend her right to argue her political position without the government deciding that her words are too offensive to be lawful.

Because once government acquires the power to punish political speech because somebody is offended, that power will not remain confined to people you disagree with.

Today it may be Pauline Hanson.

Tomorrow it could be you.

REPEAL 18C.
DEFEND FREE SPEECH.
LET AUSTRALIANS ARGUE.
