Once infamous as a death trap scarred by conflict and lawlessness, the Kerio Valley is quickly transforming into a hub of agriculture and industrial growth.

Anchoring this transformation is the Tot Mango Processing Factory managed by the Kerio Valley Development Agency (KVDA).

Situated in a region renowned for its immense mango production, the factory has directly employed more than 30 people, with many others indirectly benefiting from its operations.

The factory has opened up vital employment opportunities for locals, offering young people dignified livelihoods that contrast sharply with the insecurity that once defined the region.

In addition, it guarantees farmers a reliable market for their mangoes while stimulating new investments across the value chain, from aggregation to transport and processing.

The factory's flagship product, Kerio Valley Mango fruit drink, has grown into a household name, sold across the country, including in the capital Nairobi, with Eldoret City standing out as its biggest market. It also processes fresh mango fruits into mango puree, which is sold directly to high-value markets.

Besides mango processing, the factory also sells original honey. Within the mango plantations, apiaries are maintained and from these hives, high-quality honey is harvested and packaged, further diversifying income streams for local farmers.

Equally impactful is the factory's nursery program, which trains farmers and supplies them with high-quality seedlings, ensuring both sustainability and increased productivity.

In 2024, it donated 50,000 seedlings to the county government for distribution to farmers across Elgeyo-Marakwet.

The ripple effect is unmistakable. Young people who once flirted with criminality now see a brighter future in agribusiness and the valley is reemerging as a land of opportunity, enterprise and renewal.
