The Uganda Community Museums Association (UCOMA), with support from UNESCO, proudly presents Uganda’s First National Intangible Cultural Heritage Exhibition , a landmark showcase celebrating the diversity, creativity, and living traditions of our nation.
Today, we had the honor of joining Uganda’s Indigenous Minority Groups at Ndere Cultural Centre, invited by the Cross-Cultural Foundation of Uganda, to commemorate the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples 2025.
This year’s theme, “Indigenous Peoples’ Right to Self-Determination: A Pathway for Food Security and Sovereignty,” highlighted the challenges faced by communities from Karamoja, Rwenzori, Elgon and West Nile whose cultures and lands are under threat from mining, agriculture and tourism.

It's sad to learn about the demise of Frank Muramuzi, the Executive Director of NAPE. His role in reviving the natural sacred sites and custodianship, and human rights in Bugungu can never be forgotten. Our condolences to his family, NAPE, and his friends.
In Uganda, @CCFU_NGO has been working for 12+ years to strengthen Indigenous Minority Groups voices through regional platforms.
So far, there are 3 active platforms, Rwenzori, Karamoja & West Nile.
Each unites communities to document cultural rights & engage decision-makers.
Yesterday, as we marked #IndigenousPeoplesDay, one message stood out.
‘Let’s demand affirmative action for Indigenous Minority Groups in Uganda.’
True inclusion means policies that recognise, protect & empower IMGs not just words once a year.

As Uganda we can’t call ourselves “The Pearl of Africa” while Indigenous peoples are silenced, displaced & erased from our story.
Their lands.
Their languages.
Their heritage.
Protecting them is protecting Uganda itself.

The Equal Opportunities Commission, in partnership with the Cross-Cultural Foundation of Uganda (@CCFU_NGO) and other stakeholders, commemorated the International Day of the World’s Indigenous People under the 2025 theme: “Indigenous Minorities and AI: Defending Rights, Shaping the Future.” held at Ndere Cultural Centre in Kampala, provided a platform to highlight the cultural rights and concerns of Uganda’s indigenous minorities.
Hon. Safia Nalule Jjuuko, Chairperson of the Equal Opportunities Commission, emphasized that the day celebrates Uganda’s rich cultural diversity and serves as a vital opportunity to promote the inclusion of ethnic minorities in national development. Drawing from her personal journey as a person with a disability, former Kampala City Councilor and Member of Parliament, she passionately advocated for the integration of marginalized groups in planning and budgeting processes especially within the education, health and infrastructure sectors. She stressed that issues affecting minorities are cross-cutting and should not be relegated solely to the Ministry of Gender.
She further highlighted her role in introducing the Gender and Equity Certificate under the Public Finance Management Act (2015), which legally obligates all government entities to plan and budget for women, persons with disabilities and ethnic minorities. The Equal Opportunities Commission remains the only body mandated to assess compliance with these equity standards. Key interventions by the EOC include capacity building for minority communities, stakeholder engagement, research, legal investigations and dedicated reporting on ethnic minority concerns.
Despite progress, Hon. Nalule noted that ethnic minorities continue to face exclusion from basic services and decision-making spaces and are now at increased risk of marginalization due to the growing digital divide. She called for inclusive national frameworks, effective affirmative action, and stronger partnerships among government, civil society and development partners to close opportunity gaps. In her closing remarks, she commended the support of partner institutions and reaffirmed the Commission’s firm commitment to protecting Uganda’s indigenous communities from marginalization and cultural extinction.
