OPEC’s letter conveys an old message with a new tone. It says “they are coming for us - for real now”. Bad news for COP28, though few had high expectations.
But NB: in a sense the letter confirms that the energy transition never had more momentum. So gotta keep the moment going.
Just announced at #COP28—parties reached an agreement on the Santiago Network for loss & damage, whose secretariat will be hosted by UNDRR & UNOPS. The Network will provide technical assistance to developing countries that are acutely vulnerable to the effects of climate change.
On the eve of #COP28, I'm re-upping this piece I wrote for @DaedalusJournal. As #climate scholars, it is our professional responsibility to engage in climate politics.
We all know that the climate crisis is here. It's time for all hands on deck. 1/n

I’m so honored to be speaking at this event - put on in memory of Saleem and the incredible influence he had shaping adaptation and loss and damage in the @UNFCCC .
Make sure you register to join us on Monday! https://t.co/qMvg0EfzLb
I’m so excited to share that today marks my first day as full-time Associate Professor (“Chargé de cours”) in International Environmental Politics at @REPI_ULB@SciencePoULB@ULBruxelles!
If you’re wondering why the international response to loss and damage has been delayed over the last 30 years, our new open-access article in @GEPJournal offers a typology of negotiating tactics countries have used to obstruct financing for this issue.

My co-authors and I show how these tactics have shaped political and legal understandings of loss and damage—and how they have affected potential policy solutions. We hope this article helps actors better anticipate and respond to barriers to action in future UNFCCC negotiations.
