The unfortunate reality of our educational system

I overheard some people talking about Nigerian tertiary institutions and how they aren't really shaping students for the outside world of work.

And I asked myself: if we're being 100% honest with ourselves, are most Nigerian tertiary institutions really preparing students for the world of work?

My answer? Uhm… nope.

Many courses in Nigeria today still lean heavily towards theory, while practical experience gets less attention than it probably deserves.

Well, theory is important though. Knowing the principles, understanding the academic side of your field all matters…

But what happens when you graduate and someone asks you to actually do the thing you've spent four years or more studying?

A student can know the definition of something, cite five scholars and pass an exam… but still struggle when asked to actually apply that knowledge in a real-world setting.

And honestly, that's where the problem is oh.

Because the world of work isn't going to ask you to cite your lecturer, you're gonna have to show some work! 😂

And so I ask: Are Nigerian tertiary institutions preparing students for the world of work, or are they mostly preparing us to pass exams?
