There is a friend of mine who opened a butchery in Kinoo in 2010. He bought half a cow.
On the first day he sold a quarter kilo. The next day the liver had transformed from red to black. That was the first thing he ate. That day he sold a kilo.
On the third day he opened the door and a battalion of multi-colored house flies came flying into the butchery like Ukrainian drones. "Kimani wept."
He called me. Those days I was driving a Toyota Starlet, one of two vehicles that didn't show me news. We put the meat in a sack and took it home. We boiled it twice, added enough spices to confuse bacteria and people , we called in people. Those days I consulted the spirits once in a while. It was a funeral. We refused to celebrate while one of ours was crying.
Anyway, that night I took home a big chunk. This chairlady loves meat very much. We sat around the table. Those days everybody was at home, it was a big celebration.
In the middle of the night, I had a dream: some Mukurino had hung me upside down and were beating my stomach like a drum. On waking up, it turned out it was my stomach finishing me off. That night the whole house was like a marathon. The girls and I had to share the toilet. The boys, being boys, used the garden at the back of the house . They were lucky.
Early next morning I took everyone to hospital and spent 3k on medication and ORS. I should have bought three kilos of meat, it would have been cheaper kilo ilikua 400 ksh hizo siku.
I remembered that story because someone had opened a butchery along Koinange Road on your way to Ng'irubi and has seen bad things like me. I saw him carrying meat on a motorbike and I knew a future storyteller is in the making. We wish him well. Gods speed .
