As @NUHW’s strike for patients’ rights gains momentum, I wanted to share a piece I wrote last year about disability justice & my own experience as a healthcare worker with the @SEIU
Solidarity with everyone out there in the streets 👊 #KaiserDontDeny

Normalize not having academics on panels but rather everyday people whose entire lives and experiences are what the academy's extractive research is based on.
@sashaperigo This is so real! I’ve had so many people say “wow fire season must have been intense growing up” and I’m always like … no but the rain was definitely a sight to behold lmao
Solidarity with suicidal people looks like making therapy widely accessible, destigmatizing ALL mental health conditions (not just anxiety & depression), and incorporating “mad studies” (research produced by suicidal folks) into therapy training programs
Supporting suicidal people in a meaningful way includes eliminating the involvement of police in 5150 calls, closing down jails & prisons (which serve as a dumping ground for many suicidal people), and overhauling current inpatient models entirely
The model of “suicide prevention” is about preventing the outcome of suicide, rather than improving the day-to-day lives of suicidal people
As a result, it tends to focus on hot line support and individualistic self-care, rather than advocacy at a systemic level
The mental health system is designed to silence people who experience suicidality, by stigmatizing them & threatening them with forced hospitalization should they speak out about their symptoms
This makes it challenging for suicidal folks to organize or advocate for themselves

It’s #SuicidePreventionMonth, which means it’s a great time to talk about how harmful suicide prevention can be
As a movement, #SuicidePrevention centers the experiences of those left behind by suicidal loved ones, not the experiences of suicidal folks themselves
“Relieved of the deforming crush of financial fear, and of the world’s battering demands and expectations, people’s personalities have started to assume their true shape.
And a lot of them don’t want to return to wasting their days in purgatorial commutes...”
“... after a year in isolation, I, at least, have gotten acclimated to a different existence—quieter, calmer, and almost entirely devoid of bullshit.”

When passing basic tenants rights legislation in a state with a Democratic supermajority requires “compromise”, it becomes apparent that the Democratic Party is not a tenants’ party.
