@lymanstoneky I believe the intention of the delegates in convention was to allow the AALC more leeway to work through the issue, and that the resolution as passed by the delegates was not intended to funnel us into a state of rupture. Granted, the situation is still quite serious.

@aakashgupta Pretty sure a lot of that complexity is needless inefficiency that accumulated over time as part of a somewhat haphazard evolutionary process. Brain hardware is small & energy efficient, but I doubt all those microscopic components & behaviors are necessary for optimal function.

@hipsterlutheran For instance, I hear folks saying that Lutherans are just evangelicals with the sacraments. They know something’s different, but still ID with that division. At least semiotically I think it contributes to the idea that Luths can just be lumped in.

@hipsterlutheran The label is used selectively, but I hear Lutherans express solidarity with evangelicals in the context of political polling (using “we/us” language). Granted, some recognize the cooperation is limited, but my impression is distinctions are quickly lost in other areas as well.

@hipsterlutheran At least in Western culture, that’s probably fair. We tend not to like to think of Jesus placating God’s wrath. I wonder if cultures that struggle more with animism and emphasize Christus Victor would highlight his active role as priest more?

@hipsterlutheran Despite plenty of occasions that mention God’s will in relation to the cross, it’s definitely weighted much more heavily toward Christ’s offering Himself as you said though, which has lots of implications.

@hipsterlutheran Really interesting thought. They use the term propitiation, but Romans 3:25 and 1 John 4:10 are pretty much the equivalent idea and sacrifice is included in the gloss as its concrete manifestation. Heb. 10:5-7 is also interesting.

@hipsterlutheran Absolutely, and your caution is a good one. Probably in most circles the lack of the distinction you’re making is the bigger issue.
