Hamat Bah Warns ‘Gambia Will Never Be Lebanon,’ Says Foreigners Will Not Run the Country

Land Minister Hamat Bah has warned Gambians against allowing what he described as “foreigners” to assume leadership of the country, telling voters at a political rally to be cautious about their choices ahead of the election.

“This country will never become Lebanon,” Bah said. “Nobody will take over this country and give it to foreigners. Be careful with your votes.”

Addressing young Gambians in particular, Bah claimed that some political actors were attempting to mislead them in their pursuit of power. He also invoked Fiji as a warning of what he said could happen if Gambians failed to guard the country’s political leadership.

“No foreigner will run this country. Gambians will run their country,” Bah said. “Whatever they use, whoever they use, they will never run this country.”

Although Bah did not name a particular politician in the remarks provided, his repeated references to Lebanon and “foreigners” could be interpreted as an allusion to Kanifing Municipal Council Mayor Talib Ahmed Bensouda, whose paternal grandfather has been reported to be of Lebanese origin.

The remarks inject questions of ancestry and national identity into the political campaign at a time when candidates and their supporters are competing for votes ahead of the presidential election.
