@Leopold00488384@ElissaMMonteiro I definitely agree that SA’s time is mostly consumed by sports related activities. And it also requires a lot of mental skills to avoid feeling pressure and overwhelming. All these adds up to not really focusing in academics. @ElissaMMonteiro#ucr150
Being a SA means dealing with training, weight room, trips, team bondings, games, there are so many things going on in relation to the sport that the athlete may sometimes forget about the academics side and may affect their school-to-career transition @ElissaMMonteiro#ucr150
What does it take, so that the NCAA can step back and realize that something is wrong, and those who are supposed to be caring (SAs) don’t feel that way? Well, apparently an all-American basketball player filing a lawsuit against them is not enough. #ucr150@ElissaMMonteiro
@dmrslll@ElissaMMonteiro Exactly, student-athletes should feel free and comfortable whenever they want to transfer... there’s a reason why they want to transfer in first place. And mostly, although they need education about transferring they should receive support. @ElissaMMonteiro#ucr150
Transferring from an NAIA school to UCR was not an easy journey. Lot of papers and talking needed to be done. At least I’m happy I didn’t have to sit for a whole year and I was able to integrate easily to my “new environment” in just a couple of days. @ElissaMMonteiro#ucr150
@dmrslll@ElissaMMonteiro Exactly, sometimes we put things, like playing time, before things like our own health. A safe environment should be created so athletes feel safe to report injuries, specially head injuries. @ElissaMMonteiro#ucr150
How is it possible that even with the new technology, various research and many cases in sport-related sports like football, suspected and confirm concussions on athletes are rising, and worst that 50-80% of all sport-related mTBIs go unreported? @ElissaMMonteiro#ucr150
Although there’s a lot of room to improvement, and there’s still some big gaps between gender among student-athletes, it’s good to know that since Title IX was enacted female participation in sports increased significantly @ElissaMMonteiro#UCR150
@Leopold00488384@ElissaMMonteiro I completely agree with you Leopoldo. I think the same way as you, it seems like every time the NCAA and the different institutions benefit from something, the student-athletes are not. @ElissaMMonteiro#UCR150
“NLI provides little protection for a player - it primarily protects the University”. Again we see the students-athletes like an object from which institutions can benefit of, making the NLI not a fair exchange. @ElissaMMonteiro#ucr150
@Robert54250942@ElissaMMonteiro Completely agree with you Robert. Worrying about payments will also add stress to student-athletes as they need to do even more than playing and studying, and that in some way will affect the athlete performance in the class and in the sports. @ElissaMMonteiro#UCR150
Imaging being a student-athlete, generating revenue for your institution without getting any from it, keeping amateurism standards, academic standards, performance has to be at your top and still having to work in order to pay for your things... @ElissaMMonteiro#UCR150
Injustice is not something new within the NCAA. It’s been a critique to the way these organizations work and it’s still happening. Most recent example, march madness and the difference between men and women weight training facilities.
@ElissaMMonteiro#UCR150
@JonickPineda@ElissaMMonteiro Completely agree with you Jonick. Injustice between men and women has been so obvious for a long time already but still nothing changed. @ElissaMMonteiro
@HugoMaganaJr1@helloJuJudy Hugo, I understand your concern as when college is coming to an end, we just realize as student-athletes that we may not succeed professionally and our athletic career may come to an end. And it is when we realize that we are not well prepare for the “real world”.
@ambitiouschiri @helloJuJudy I totally agree with you Daniel. It is a pity that the competitiveness, effort, dedication and passion that student-athletes have always shown is not valued as it deserves, and that everything after all is governed on the basis of income and benefit.
@ponation_@helloJuJudy Completely agree with you!!! Throughout history and today, women’s athletes have achieved so many great things and registered incredible marks that have put the entire world on their knees. Definitely they shouldn’t go unnoticed!
