JUST IN: On March 2, Spain told the United States no.

Not a diplomatic hedge. Not a quiet delay. A direct refusal to allow American military aircraft to use the jointly-operated bases at Rota and Morón for strikes against Iran. The US relocated 15 aircraft. Spain held its position.

On March 3, Trump sat in the Oval Office and said: “We’re going to cut off all trade with Spain.”

Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez did not move. His government denied the White House’s subsequent claim that Spain had “agreed to cooperate with the US military.” Spain went further and publicly reiterated its opposition to the war itself.

On March 5, Spain announced it was deploying the frigate Cristóbal Colón, one of its most advanced warships, to the Eastern Mediterranean. Destination: the waters near Cyprus. Mission: air defense and evacuation support following a Hezbollah drone strike on the British RAF base at Akrotiri. Expected arrival in Crete: March 10.

Now hold those two facts next to each other.

Spain refused to let US aircraft use Spanish soil to strike Iran. Then Spain dispatched a warship to protect a British military base from Iran’s proxy force.

This is not contradiction. This is the most precise diplomatic maneuver in the alliance this week.

Sánchez drew a distinction that most of NATO has been unable or unwilling to articulate. Spain will not be an offensive platform for a war it did not sanction. It will defend European and allied territory from the consequences of that war. Those are not the same commitment. The first makes Spain a co-belligerent. The second makes Spain a responsible NATO member fulfilling its defense obligations.

Trump’s trade threat was designed to eliminate that distinction, to force Spain to choose between its economy and its opposition to the war’s architecture.

Spain chose the distinction.

The Cristóbal Colón will be sailing toward Cyprus by the time this posts.

On the same sea where Hezbollah drones are hunting British military infrastructure, Spain will have a frigate in the water, on its own terms, for its own stated reasons, under no instruction from Washington.

That is what alliance looks like when a country decides to write its own terms.

La pregunta no es si la bicicleta es mala para la economía.
La pregunta es qué tipo de economía necesita que la gente enferme para funcionar.

There is only one Vietnamese people separated by a imaginary line drawn by outsiders.

You talk about 1954 as if the partition was destiny.

It was not.

The Geneva Accords mandated free and fair elections in 1956, so the Vietnamese could reunify peacefully.

Eisenhower’s own intelligence admitted Hồ Chí Minh would win by 80 percent.

That is why the United States blocked the elections.

That is why your puppet regime was installed.

That is why the country was carved in two to prevent democracy, not defend it.

You call our president Hồ Chí Minh a "brutal scourge."

Your CIA called him "the George Washington of Vietnam."

The only thing dangerous about him was that he wanted a Vietnam not ruled by France, Japan, or America.

But let us talk about the Gulf of Tonkin, since you think "the rest is history."

There was no second attack.

They were farmers defending the same land their ancestors defended for over 2,000 years against the Han, the Tang, the Song, the Mongols, the Ming, the Qing, the French, and the Japanese.

We were not fighting for communism.

We were fighting for Vietnam.

And we won.

That is the part your version always forgets.

You lost a war you cannot psychologically accept losing, so you rewrite it as a morality play where America tried to save a "good" Vietnam from a "bad" one.

There was no good Vietnam and bad Vietnam.

There was only Vietnam

And the empire that tried to break it.

The rest is not history.

The rest is denial.
