The 173-year-old South Bushwick Reformed Church in Brooklyn burned yesterday. Flames engulfed the steeple, which collapsed as firefighters battled a three-alarm blaze. The historic wooden landmark now faces likely demolition. Cause remains under investigation with no public determination yet.

Broader numbers put this in context. The Family Research Council tracked 415 hostile incidents against U.S. churches in 2024 alone, affecting 383 different churches. That included 55 arsons, attempted arsons, or fire-related cases, alongside hundreds of vandalism incidents and other attacks. 2023 saw even more at 485.

Fire data shows an average of around 1,300 fires per year at places of worship in recent periods, with intentional causes making up roughly 15% in available estimates. Historic wooden structures like this one carry inherent risks from age, wiring, or maintenance issues.

Yet when landmark churches keep suffering major losses and documented hostile acts run into the hundreds annually, treating every case as routine "old building" misfortune starts to wear thin. Investigations often wrap without clear public answers on motive or patterns.

Young woman in Seattle is warning people to carry a firearm after she says she was jumped, beaten, and robbed by a man and two women he was with.

She was out with what appears to have been an acquaintance when she was attacked on the street. People watched, but no one came to her aid.

She wrote:

“Seattle’s streets are overrun with people completely out of their minds and willing to cause serious harm for very little reward.

Mind you, the person I was with didn’t even consider taking me to get medical attention. At least they called the police, who, in the grand scheme of things, can do very little and rarely make a difference when it comes to drug-driven crime on the streets.
