Is Metabolic Surgery Having an Identity Crisis?
• The answer is “no.”
• Anti-obesity Meds (AOMs) are very effective now (>20% WL)
• Head-to-head studies AOM vs Surgery have not yet been conducted
• Response to AOMs treatment varies:
- With DM can have less response (10%WL)
- With morbid obesity may not be enough
- Adherence long-term may be challenging (cost, etc.)
• SG and RYGB have robust data on efficacy and safety long-term
• Treatment of obesity is not a one-size-fits-all (multi-modal options are needed)
• Surgery remains the most effective and durable anti-obesity intervention
• Surgery still widely underutilized despite large body of evidence (long-term efficacy and safety)
