Glad you care about helping Memphis, Mr. Speaker. May I suggest you start by listening to the voters who overwhelmingly said yes to the three referendums less than a year ago.

Memphians spoke loud and clear on what they wanted to make us safe:
- 81% for requiring handgun permits and mandated safe storage
- 80% to ban assault rifles in city limits
- 84% supporting red-flag laws

I would say you could also stop taking checks from the gun lobby & pushing policies that flood our communities with more guns, but we know that won’t happen. So perhaps, just GET OUT OF OUR WAY let us do the work to keep our families safe.

Memphis and Shelby County need a Crime Lab.

Monday, June 23rd, the Shelby County Commission will vote on funding for a focused crime lab in Shelby County. Shelby County Mayor Lee Harris and I have worked to educate commissioners and the community about the importance of this lab.

Now we need your help.

Please email your county commissioner and respectfully ask them to fund the lab so we can increase the solve rate of crimes and hold offenders accountable.

The present system with a lab in Jackson, TN serving all of West Tennessee lacks the capacity to meet all of our needs timely. This is not a criticism of the hard-working people in that lab. It is simply a reality of the volume of evidence that needs to be tested to bring violent criminals to justice and drive crime rates downward.

Today, I had the pleasure of joining @mayorleeharris in asking the Shelby County Board of Commissioners to provide $5.5 million in recurring funding for a focused crime lab in Shelby County. I want to thank Mayor Harris for his support and the County Commission for their interest in the facility.

As I told the Commission, the most significant thing this lab can do for us is increase our solve rate. With ballistics testing, digital forensics, and rapid DNA, we can solve crimes faster and hold #offendersaccountable.

This is not a replacement for the work already being done by the TBI. This is an enhancement to bridge the gap between the available supply of forensic testing and the high demand.

Today's The Daily Memphian reports that 2024 homicides in the City of Memphis are down 25% compared to 2023. That's a level not seen since 2019.

This is good news to start 2025, but we all know there is more to do. It is essential we work together to continue to drive down violent crime in our community.

My office will continue to prioritize violent crime, just as we have done since the day I took office.
