It is interesting that the KSS-N nuclear-powered submarine will become the Korean Navy's "iron fist," simultaneously fulfilling some portion of the roles of both SSGN and SSBN.
Also, It is interesting to see how far the KSS-N nuclear-powered submarine will operate. Due to its size of 8,000 to 9,000 tons, excluding the Yellow Sea, it is estimated that its operational range will extend beyond the East Sea and the East China Sea, where South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, and China meet. (Based on the Jeju naval base)
In peacetime, it will track North Korean submarines from the south and east, while in times of conflict, it will also undertake missions to strike naval fleets and critical bases from a far.
Well, this is not entirely new, as the KSS-II, KSS-III Batch-I, and KSS-III II submarines have been performing missions in such areas since the establishment of the Submarine Command.
However, in accordance with securing sea lanes, joining the U.S. Indo-Pacific strategy and the Navy implementation plan under Defense Reform 2.0, the actual operational and patrol areas are scheduled to expand beyond the existing scope.
While the exact armament configuration of the KSS-N is only roughly known, it is expected to be equipped with the previously confirmed next-generation SLBMs.
Basically, it appears capable of accommodating all the armament configurations used by the KSS-III Batch-I and II. Furthermore, if the configuration incorporates both the super-large VLS and the submarine-specific KVLS-II, it will be able to operate large strike missiles designed for the KVLS-II.
Regarding the torpedo tubes, it is speculated that they will retain the existing configuration of heavy torpedoes, self-propelled sea mines, HS-III cruise missiles, HS-V supersonic cruise missiles, and so on.
Until recently, I had expected the KSS-N to be planned with a full displacement (submerged) of around 6,000 tons, but a friend on my team told me he predicted it would far exceed 9,000 tons.
I guess I underestimated them.
There are a few minor realistic issues, but since I have discussed them several times before, let's move on.
