Something wild is happening on the Midjourney subreddit.
People are telling stories and sharing photos of historic events - like the “Great Cascadia” earthquake that devastated Oregon in 2001.
The kicker? It never happened. The images are AI-generated.
Your followers are not your fans.
That’s hard for many artists and creatives to accept, but it’s the truth.
Artists hear the same rhetoric often: “Build your social media following!” “Use it to promote your work!” “Be your own distribution!” It’s good advice, but it’s reductive without context.
On most social networks, it’s impossible to segment your followers:
– Do they love your music?
– Do they like you as a person?
– Or do they just find your posts entertaining?
– Do they follow because they find you attractive?
- Do they hate follow?
Hard to know for sure.
There are artists with 10M+ social followers, but can’t sell 10k+ albums when they release. Similarly, some artists generate 10M+ streams, but can’t sell many concert tickets.
Social media is still essential for many artists to promote their work. But it’s also a vanity metric that can be manipulated and has its tradeoffs.
