It is disappointing to buy a book upon Elon Musk’s recommendation, Destined for War: Can America and China Escape Thucydides’ Trap?”, only to find a gross distortion before even finishing the preface.
“The Long Peace” or the absence of total war between great powers in the aftermath of World War II, is due primarily to nuclear deterrence: — to wit, Mutually Assured Destruction.
It is not due to the “rules based order” nominally led by the U.S., a neoliberal and neoconservative euphemism for the dominance of IGOs that push the Western globalist agenda.
Thus, this book about “Thucydides Trap” is ironically fueling the very hubris that was the source of Athens’ downfall in its disastrous Sicilian expedition.
While I respect Graham Allison as an international relations analyst, the glowing praise about this book from the likes of Joe Biden and Michael Hayden already has me suspect the book will be mistaken for a cautionary tale to soften resistance to a silent war that China is already waging against America.
“The Long Peace” means the absence of total war due to nuclear weapons proliferation; but as Clausewitz instructs, war is the continuation of politics by other means.
Let us briefly recap: China bio-engineered deadly viruses like SARS-CoV-2 and remained silent for weeks as it spread around the world. It has carried out cultural warfare by tatgeting iconic US corporations to pull them under Chinese influence. It has devalued its currency and has effectively dumped its cheap goods onto the US market. It has purchased a massive amount of US debt, fueling our unsustainable path towards global de-dollarization. It has targeted America’s most powerful politicians, particularly the president’s own family, for successful influence operations.. It has subsequently carried out invasive espionage operations within the United States gathering sensitive information on military bases and nuclear missile silos.
America is indeed at war with China already. But due to America’s ideological subversion, economic dependency, institutional weakening, policy fugue and political corruption, the nation can no longer recognize that it is at war.
