I wrote about a court that redesigned the drug court model to extend community-based services (rather than incarceration) to anyone with felony charges of any level. Here’s the abstract of my article in @uclawjournal:

To learn about the ATI Court, I watched court, talked to the judge, prosecutors, defense attorneys, and staff of the Center for Justice Innovation, who play a central role in running the court.
I wanted to learn about the Manhattan Alternative-to-Incarceration Court because I was curious about how people are experimenting with dealing with violent or serious crime without centering incarceration.
Always time to #HighlightWomen. Congratulations to Grace Li (@g_y_li) on her book review of @tommie_shelby’s book The Idea of Prison Abolition! Now in @michlawreview’s book review issue: https://t.co/28eCu5e7Ad
New in @michlawreview’s book review issue: I review @tommie_shelby’s book The Idea of Prison Abolition. In it I examine and extend Shelby’s definition of prison, which we need to define to know what and how to abolish. https://t.co/JS94H6kyfw #newlawreviewarticles
The week in review: @ethanris on why you should ignore the Ivy League, Greta Krippner on the persistence of gender discrimination in insurance markets, and @g_y_li on the role of associative life in prisons.
Plus, the best of LPE from around the web.

Today, Grace Li (@g_y_li) explains how the state relies on associations in prisons - affinity groups, peer education groups, and other collectivities - to extract labor from incarcerated people.

I reviewed Tommie Shelby's book The Idea of Prison Abolition, in which he concludes that we should reform, but need not abolish, prisons. (I disagree!) My review examines and extends his *definition* of prison, which helps identify exactly what to abolish https://t.co/oo9PpQ6Af9
