The Maldives intervened in The Gambia v. Myanmar on 10 November 2023, under the previous Government. It is in that very declaration, Maldives expressly argued that Article V of the Genocide Convention obliges States to enact domestic legislation criminalising genocide. Yet, the Maldives had not done so.

It was not this Government that “jumped into proceedings” making that very argument without first addressing our own laws.

On 1 October 2024, this Government intervened in South Africa v. Israel, advancing arguments on States’ obligations to prevent and punish genocide, including direct and public incitement.

Both interventions were legally justified. Neither required prior domestic criminalisation.

This Government is correcting a legislative failure that has persisted for over four decades. That is not headline-chasing. That is doing our job.

The facts are clear. Your understanding of them, evidently, is not.⁠

In an official response to a parliamentary inquiry, the Ministry of Housing provided a financial breakdown comparing traditional tourism leasing models against the proposed Eagle Hills Rasmale' real estate model:

🔹 Eagle Hills Real Estate Model (10 Years): ~$3.1B in land premiums (10% developer revenue share), $500M upfront value via 5,000 social housing units in Hulhumalé, a 4% fee on all unit resales, full economic tax intake, and zero import duty waivers.

ރާއްޖޭގެ ޤާނޫނުތައް އޮންނަ ގޮތުން ބިމުގެ މިލްކުވެރިކަން ދާއިމަށް ދޫކޮށްލުމަކީ ކުރެވޭނެ ކަމެއް ނޫން. މަނިކުފާނު މަޖިލީސް މެމްބަރަކަށް ހުންނެވިއިރު މަނިކުފާނު ނިސްބަތްވާ އަތޮޅު ފާފުއަތޮޅުގެ މިލްކުވެރިކަން ބޭރު ބަޔަކަށް ދޭން މަނިކުފާނުގެ ވޯޓާއެކު ފާސްކުރި ޤާނޫނު މިހާރު ވަނީ އުވާލާފަ.
