As UNESCO Goodwill Ambassadors gathered in Athens for their 2026 Annual Meeting — the first to take place outside our Headquarters in Paris — it was a great pleasure to exchange on how their experience, expertise and voices can advance @UNESCO’s work and bring our mandate closer to people around the world.
At the High-level event on Artificial Intelligence and Culture, held in the presence of President of the Hellenic Republic Constantine An. Tassoulas, I joined Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni, international human rights lawyer Amal Clooney, and UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for the Protection and Promotion of Culture Costantza Sbokou-Constantakopoulou for a rich exchange on the place of culture in a world increasingly shaped by AI and on the importance of preserving human creativity, cultural diversity and our shared values.
As artificial intelligence increasingly impacts on our societies, culture must remain at the heart of how we think about its future.
My sincere thanks to the Greek authorities, the Captain Vassilis & Carmen Constantakopoulos Foundation and UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador Costantza Sbokou-Constantakopoulou for making this UNESCO gathering possible and for their warm hospitality.

I welcome the @UN General Assembly’s proclamation of the International Decade of Culture for Sustainable Development (2027–2036). My thanks to Viet Nam for driving this forward, and to all co-sponsors and the Core Group of Friends of Culture for their support.
Over the next ten years, culture must not only be recognized, but funded, protected and placed at the heart of how societies shape their future.
@UNESCO is ready to lead this work. For culture. For sustainable development. For people everywhere.
